From 19 to 23 October, Francisco de Vitoria University in Madrid, Spain, is hosting the ACE²-EU Alliance Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) “Person-centered Prostheses and Implants”, attended by Lietuvos inžinerijos kolegija students Edvinas Maleckas, Vakaris Kariūnas and Paulius Urbonavičius.
The programme focuses on the design, production and adaptation of personalised prostheses and implants to meet individual patients' needs. It brings together knowledge from biomedicine, mechanical and industrial engineering, materials science, physiotherapy and other disciplines. Students explore not only the technical aspects of prosthesis development but also patients' biomechanical, therapeutic and emotional needs, aiming to create solutions that improve their quality of life.
On the first day of the programme, participants visited Toledo University Hospital, where they gained insights into rehabilitation processes, prosthesis fitting and the work of healthcare professionals. Over the following days, students will take part in practical workshops, learning how to apply 3D scanning, computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing technologies to develop personalised prosthesis prototypes.
Working in international interdisciplinary teams, participants will design and manufacture prototypes, select suitable materials, conduct mechanical tests and perform digital simulations. Based on the test results, students will refine their solutions and present their final projects at the end of the programme.
