From 12 to 16 October, Lietuvos inžinerijos kolegija HEI (LIK) is hosting the international ACE²-EU Alliance Applied Blended Challenge (ABC) programme "Cities That Care: Flood Resilience". The programme brings together students from ACE²-EU partner institutions to explore the impact of climate change, flood risks and ways to strengthen the resilience of cities and communities to extreme natural events.
On the first day of the programme in Girionys, students presented the challenges posed by flooding and climate change in their respective countries, while LIK Associate Professor Dr Egidijus Kasiulis introduced participants to the impact of climate change on hydrological regimes and flood risks. Throughout the programme, students are also deepening their knowledge of sustainable stormwater management, green infrastructure, spatial planning, the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the role of hydraulic engineering structures in managing flood risks.
The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical activities and study visits. Participants will visit the Kavarskas Hydroelectric Power Plant and Dam, and explore the urban and riverside environment of Anykščiai, as well as the landscape of the Šventoji River Valley. In Kaunas, visits are planned to the Kauno vandenys wastewater treatment plant and the Kaunas Meteorological Station, alongside a walk through the Old Town, Santaka Park and Nemunas Island, during which participants will assess flood risks in urban areas.
